Ministry in transition

As the New Year begins, St Paul’s enters a period of transition into new life. While initially sparked by financial considerations and tinged with grief, the faithfulness and courage of the people of St Paul’s has created a parish culture open to change and perfect for fostering an innovative new model of ministry. This is a collaborative, transformational model centred on “the priesthood of all believers” (1 Peter 2:9) serving as the “Body of Christ” (1. Cor. 12:12-27) pursuing that which the Lord requires of us: “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8).

From 1 January, 2021, Fr Daniel begins the transition from full time to part time ministry starting at 5 days a week (full time clergy are paid 6 days a week). As the community transitions to its new life in Christ, Fr Daniel will move to 3 days a week in coming months (with the approval of the Archbishop at that time). Three days a week is both financially sustainable at this time and enables a healthy and balanced ministry in our current context. Fr Daniel will serve as what the Christian church refers to as a ‘bi-vocational’ or ‘dual vocation’ priest – a few days a week in traditional ordained ministry and a few days a week in another paid ministry outside the parish where he is in a great position to serve as an Ambassador for the parish, a servant of God in the world meeting people where they are in their own lives and workplaces.

The beautiful humans of St Paul’s opened their hearts to God’s call on their lives and sought only to love and serve the Lord our God. While numerically small, St Paul’s is a spiritually strong parish comprised of gifts and talents to offer the mission of God and the wider world. Much effort has been and will continue to be invested in discipleship and faith formation to engage, educate and equip God’s people of St Paul’s for God’s mission in the world. This model is not a new approach in the life of the church, but it is new to St Paul’s and much of the Australian Anglican Church.

We look forward to journeying with God and with you into this exciting time of transition and transformation. If you’d like to be a part of this or feel you have something to offer or something we could offer you, we’d love to hear from you!

Stay tuned for more! Onwards and upwards in 2021!

Yours in Christ,

St Paul’s Anglican, Manly.
